Video: St. Vincent designs female-friendly guitar

St. Vincent has a designed a guitar – from scratch – that better suits women’s bodies. In March, the Grammy Award-winning musician (otherwise known as Annie Clark) releases a signature guitar in collaboration with Ernie Ball Music Man.
Clarke drew inspiration from the aesthetic of German synthpop artist Klause Nomi, Italian design and architecture collective the Memphis Group as well as Japanese-designed Teisco guitars. The colour scheme, ‘Vincent Blue’, emulates a 1967 Corvette and was hand-mixed by Clark.
The guitar body itself has been crafted to be ergonomic, lightweight, and sleek… and by ergonomic, she really means: “room for a breast or two.”
“I’m not a very big person,” she told Guitar World. “I can’t even play a ’60s Strat or ’70s Les Paul. I would need to travel with a chiropractor on tour in order to play those guitars. It’s not that those aren’t great guitars, but they render themselves impractical and unfunctional for a person like me because of their weight. They’re prohibitive, so this is a very light guitar and the weight is redistributed so that it has a thin waist.”
